Look at my crappy bass! (Pics)
So I got this bass back in July or August for $10. I thought it looked cool and I could fix it up, so I bought it. Came with a (flimsy) case too. Enjoy.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see, it's a little banged up and missing a pickup, but the wood still looks good on it. No major dings actually. The action is about a mile high and the bridge is a little crappy, but not bad condition for a bass much older than me. I especially like the knobs. But yeah, I cleaned it up pretty well, I just need to get to fixing it now. |

I have a bass that looks just like that one, same body and headstock, the neck looks the same, and the color is dead-on. The bridge is different and someone took all of the old electronics and pickups out and made a new pickguard and put new shit in. I got it for free, but I've been wondering, do you know what fucking brand that is?

That pickguard says KAY, doesn't it? I would assume that is the brand if it is the original part.

Its a Kay electric bass. They were a cheap mail-order company for instruments, produucing generally speaking cheap nonsense, but a lot of them held some charm to the owners and some werew genuinely good instruments. I can't remember if they were British or American, but we see them occassionally at work. OTOH, Jack White plays an old Kay hollowbody a lot, so they may be an American compnay.
They are defunct now, and parts are nigh-on impossible to get. Finding them is challenging to say the least, and sometimes the new tech doesn't blend with the old. I've had to completely refurb a Kay before to make it playable again. ![]() |
