New Bass Day (not exactly new... I'm just lazy) - 56k: Bite me.
After deciding that the parents did not need to know about a small tuition refund that unexpectedly arrived at my door, I came home one day to find...
![]() A BOMB! No, no, that can't be right... I had that one shipped straight to the embassy. It must be... A BASS! But we have to check. Dragging it into my messy-as-fucking-hell bedroom... ![]() I decide that, unless somehow my order got mixed up with the world's first stringless, fretless, neckless cardboard bass, I have work to do. My first thoughts go to ![]() but after remembering the Patchies incident I decide to hold back and find a new tool. Hmm... ![]() Could this work? Only one way to check... MURDER THE CAMERA! ![]() Or... on second thought, I shouldn't record that. A couple of hours later, ![]() Somehow the world has turned entirely sideways. I seem to be the only one who has noticed, in fact, because everyone else was turned sideways as well - putting aside the possibilities made by being the only person able to document such an incredibly extraordinary event, we observe another questionable cardboard box and my gig bag. Artificially building suspense... because I can... ![]() Ha! I knew it was in here somewhere! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bubinga top on alder body, maple six-bolt neck, active pickups and preamp. Currently tuned B E A D G C, will soon be tinkered with and will eventually wind up in F# B E A D G (when I feel like putting down $80 for new strings) for bowel-movement-inspiring rumbly goodness. Plays well, has the growl I was looking for (clips will come when I know what the fuck I'm doing), tons of fun to tinker with, and fucking gorgeous in person. Three hundred dollars, total, just to close things up. What more can we ask for? (No, pink polos do not count.) Jeff |

$300? Damn, it looks a lot more expensive than that. Congrats!

It sounds and feels a lot more expensive than that, too - Rondo rocks my fucking socks.

Neat! What is that, an HXB? I was looking at the Brice 6 strings not an hour ago

Yes, Brice HXB. Unfortunately that was the last of that particular one, and I don't know if there will be more, but even if the others aren't as good-looking they're solid and they sound good.

Fuck you, Jeff. That thing does look pretty nice, especially the top. Now, oil that fucking fretboard, sir. It looks like a bar after I'm finished with it.

Oooh, that's a gorgeous bass. I've been wanting to get a 6-string bass for quite a while now. Just not much space in my room for one (of course, after looking at your room, which has to be the messiest room I've ever seen, I might have to rethink that).
Beautiful color. |

Sometimes when my girlfriend comes over to stay, she says something like, "CLEAN YOUR ROOM!" and, if I have to go to band practice the next day, when I get back, I found out she's: done the dishes, cleaned my bathroom, and cleaned my bedroom (or she could still be asleep). I'm like, "Woah. You didn't have to do that, you know?" and she'd reply, "It didn't seem like you were ever gonna do it." ![]() I hate cleaning. Did he move into an apartment? For awhile. He moved in with a chick he's seeing, but now they live in a house. Dude, his trailer was SO fucking nasty!
And what's crazy is you can see how nice and clean it was when he first moved in in our Halloween-season pics (from exactly a year ago this time), where we were drinking and jamming. It was still pretty decent in Christmas-time when you were here.Me, I'm a total clean freak. ![]() Ok, sorry about that bullshit, Jeff. Back to your bass. It looks great! I love that oiled wood look. I wouldn't mind seeing more guitars like that. As for tuning, be forewarned (which is forearmed, as they say) - tuning down to the low F area is pretty tricky, as Naren can attest. I was using (I think, IIRC) a .165 gauge string for my bro's bass, tuned down to low F. It can work, but it gets pretty indistinct below... Ab, G at best. Mucho compression and careful EQ help (you really want that sub 80Hz tone coming through. Thank god my bro plays 100W/500W bi-amp system, AND I run him through the PA. Although he's tuned to low A, now. It can be done, however, and good luck! Report your successes, if you would, when you spring for those mother fuckin' ( ) pricey bass strings.

The strange thing is that I know exactly where everything is... except for the Ithyphallic case that I could have sworn I set right on top of the desk when I put the CD in the computer...
I really like the top, and I've contemplated taking the finish off my Blackjack and giving it a nice stain - the mahogany won't be as figured, but the colors are perfect. I'm already planning a hand-built 7 or 8 and it's really hard not to go for another bubinga top... Jeff |
