Recommendations for a New Bass Amp
Last night my bass amp during a recording session died on me. The amp is quite old and is not worth getting repaired because it would cost more for parts than the amp is worth (transformer is fried, speaker is toast, tweeter is done just about everything that could go wrong did).
![]() I appeal to the ss.org gods can you recommend me a new bass amp and cab? I do not know much about bass stuff. It will need to keep up with a drummer guitar player etc. It would be nice to have a direct output but it is not completely the end all be all amp. I usually track bass through my Axe FX II. I have about $500 to $1000 to spend. I was thinking two cabs 2x10 cab and 1x15 cab. Some players come in and incest we mic there bass cab. I have no idea what head though. Should I look at a combo? Thanks

I'd recommend a hartke LH500 or LH1000. and a good 4x10 or 8x10 if u can, Carvin sells a 1200w 4Ω 8x10 for about $600. It'll be cheap and get the job done.
with the carvin and hartke option i suggested, itll run $928.99-$1,078.00 But there are alot of options out there. So look around for what suits your style, and always check used gear. you may get lucky and find something really nice Plus, if you are going to play with people who use cab+heads (especially tube heads), never use a combo. You wont find one loud enough to keep up, and if you do it'll be more expensive than buying a cab+head that's just as powerful if not more powerful. |

Gallien Krueger makes some great sounding amps.
![]() I know some of their cabs loaded with Neodymium speakers are very light and great for gig-ing. I happily own a GK 700RB-II with a GK GLX 410. I got them both used through guitar center online for about $600. ![]() (The picture is not my actual rig, but mine is identical) |

Hey guys thanks I just picked up a Markbass Little Mark III and a 1x15 cab (probably will get a 2x10 in a bit). It will ship tomorrow and I will post it up when I get it!

I've heard and played many rigs with a 115 and a 210 that didnt sound very good because the 15 over powered the 10's. The mids and high end frequencies seemed nonexistent. |

Great tip thank you!
Makes sense. I just needed more thud for this recording project I am doing (its a Dave Mathews type band ) but when I start up my next project it will be with a 7 string bass so the 410 will need to come into play then! Thanks

It was truly sad. He had a sick ass Warwick fretless bass and I started tapping on it like a guitar. He looked at me like
![]() I will start focusing on playing bass more this summer though! |

I play through an ampeg refridgerator live not because it even sounds good but all you need live is something to here yourself with and all my tone is in my head unit and venue pa so it's never been a concern and I always record direct, or like yourself pre'd with an axe fx but I swear to this day the best ....ing cab I have ever played through was a markbass 2x10 neo cab with a littlemark 2. Such a warm and beefcake tone andis if I was in the market for a studio bass rig I wouldn't hesitate for one second to purchase that combo or anything markbass really.

In that price range, I'd get a Gallien-Krueger MB800 or Aguilar Tone Hammer 500. The Aguilar has a more versatile preamp, but both are fantastic-sounding, versatile heads well within your price range, and with plenty of juice to keep up with a drummer.
Cab-wise, see if you can't find a reasonably well cared-for Eden D410XLT or Ampeg 410HE used somewhere. |
