What a beautiful day! Rickenbacker/Dingwall content!

Since this has been the first really really nice day in ages, I decided to spend some time outside today.

There's the shed I helped my stepdad build last summer (and by helped, I balanced boards and held and moved shit while he did the actual building):

I figured, why the hell not take some nice pictures of the two new basses I've snagged to close out my gear whoring before I enter the poverty of grad school?

Gracie decided she wanted to help. Note the CamryOvDoom in the background, complete with the high-performance totally-necessary-for-grip rear spoiler

"What's that girl? You smell something awesome?"

Must be this:

Whatever it is, it's not the Prius in the background. That isn't mine

Thanks to Kevin (Crucified) for selling me this Ric 4003. It is a seriously awesome rock machine, but also does some great "traditional" sounds as well.

The vintage aesthetic also fits in well with my mother's antique-filled front hall.

Note the picture of the kid with the 'fro in the background: that's my younger brother, and yes his 'fro is that big.

Anyways, at this point Gracie started getting bored.

My mother decided to come out and comfort her. If anyone was wondering where I got my hair from, well, here's the answer.

Anyways, onto the new gem. Say hello to the Dingwall Afterburner Elite!

Gotta love that top. Beautiful wenge fingerboard too.

Yes Mike, there is no drop top. Bite me

Better upper-fret access than a huge majority of guitars too.

Awesome neck volute.

Full shot:

Dingwall Specs:
-Alder Body w/quilted maple top
-5-piece maple neck with wenge fingerboard
-34-37" scale
-2 Dingwall FD-1 pickups, Hipshot hardware
-Passive electronics (volume, 4-way rotary selector, tone, passive mid scoop switch, Neutrik locking jack)

Seriously lightweight, incredibly playable, and really well balanced. Exudes quality at every turn. The engineering that went into this bass is amazing, from the recessed tuners to the unique bridge design that has the strings sitting in the "V" between a pair of stainless steel riser screws.

There are a wide range of sounds available, and that low B is a freaking clear, clean sledgehammer. I don't really like a lot of five-string basses as they tend to feel like "4+1 string" basses due to the way you have to treat the low B differently; no concerns of this with the Dingwall. It's really easy to play too, I have small hands and adapted almost immediately. Amazing bass.

The 4003 has the Afterburner beat in terms of 'vintage' sounds and aggressive growl, while the Dingwall is more modern, clean, clear, and 'polite.' Two totally different awesome flavors, and I'm unbelievably happy to own both of these basses.

Thanks for reading!

Awesome photos

I love the Dingwall - How is that 37" for 1-3-4 fast stretches on the low string?

I absolutely love that dingwall, if I could play any bass it'd be that in ruby red. absolutely stunning and playable, and I know .... all about basses.

But I gotta say, just as an aside... nothing at all in this world triggers my gag reflex like a Rickenbacker. I have never seen one that looked remotely like anything I'd like to look at, haha

Thanks

Fast 1-3-4 in one position is too much for me. I have a very short pinky and need to shift quickly between 1 and 4, but doing a 1-3-4 with the shift is very doable. The volute placement is actually very helpful in this as it keeps your 1st finger very close to the end of 1st fret for maximum stretch potential.

The Dingwall is great, and amazing. However, I will say that I've wanted a Rickenbacker more and for longer, and it's got way more character and growl to the sound than the Dingwall, which is more of a tonal chameleon. There's just something very polarizing about Rics... you either absolutely love the looks and sound or you hate them it seems, and I definitely love it.

I'd like to try a Dingwall. I hate having to choose between 34 and 35. 34 means you have an annoyingly slack low B unless you use a mega .135 set, 35 means the higher strings are too taut and the slap sound ain't so good.
