The toothpick trick will get you by in a pinch, but for a strap button, I would suggest plugging the hole with a wooden dowel and some titebond (wood glue), then re-drill the hole. Most Toothpicks are made of soft pine, and are really too soft for that application, as it needs to support the weight of the guitar, and handle stage anticks.
