the same passive pickups are used with the "active electronics" option. it's just an onboard preamp with a push/pull volume pot with active bass and treble controls. it's not the same as having active pickups ala EMG or Blackouts.
i've had that option on 2 different Carvins. it's actually really nice for clean sounds, add a chorus pedal and some careful eqing with the carvin preamp and you can get some almost piezo like clean sounds.
