tube poweramps are MOSTLY used if clipping is needed in the last signal stage, cause it sounds good.
With SS amps, we don't really want for our power stage to clip. So all the gain produced is coming from the preamp, and the poweramp should have enough headroom to cover that up and it sounds clearer, colder but clearer. If for some reason ss poweramp goes to clip, it sounds harsh and unpleasant.
I'm just speaking from my personal experience.
