gain: not that high! this is key for a good, tight tone IMO!

it sounds good when you are by yourself, yes? get someone else to play for you at a band practise, just knock out some riffs w/ the band - stand back and listen.

record a band practise. chances are, your home EQ wont work quite so well in a band context.

i have my JSX eq'd so that it'll sound great and be heard when i play with people - im also fortunate that i like that tone when i'm just playing alone as well.
