Hmmm. Been there. One of my old bands played a string of shows in Mexico City (pretty big deal for a European band), everything comped, we're ready to have an awesome time, when shortly after our first gig our bass player decides he needs some coke, so off he goes into the audience (!) to ask random people if they know where he can score some blow. And that was the last we saw of him. Two other gigs pass, no bass player. Luckily we had his bass parts on DAT, since his erratic behavior has caused him to "forget" how to play in the past. So, the trip ends, we have to go to the airport when we find him in the hotel lobby, clothes encrusted with dried vomit, coked out of his mind asking us where he was.
We all got stopped and strip-searched at a stop-over in Washington DC since they found weed and coke in his luggage. Long-haired guys in black carrying instruments, yep, they're all together. Being questioned by the FBI is fun, let me tell ya.
I went into a big tirade about his behavior once we got back, and the band's response to me was "You're fired." Ever since then I tell people that I left that band for health reasons: They made me sick. I also tell new musicians that I work with that sobriety is one of my main hiring criteria.
