Can I improve my tone cheaply? (Line 6 content)

OK, so still weighing up the ENGL/Mesa/whatever route, but in the meantime, as a quick, cheapish fix...what can I do to improve the tone of my HD147/Marshall 1960A rig. I short, I want more tubeiness, if that makes sense...think the way tubes cut through a mix/the tone from a decent tube amp just feels...big? Right now, I'm using a pair of EMG'd ESP Ltd 6ers in E, mahogany neckthrus, and the 1960A is all stock. Some ideas I had include...

a) maybe some kind of sonic maximiser. Do these actually work? Will they add some balls to my sound.
b) new speakers? maybe a mix of, say, V30s and GT12-75s?
c) anything else? hit me guys...
