Three books I repeatedly return to are:
"The Art of Writing Music - A Practical Guide for Composers and Arrangers" by John Cacavas. It's strongly geared towards writing orchestral music for film & TV, not pop songs about your girl, your dick, your feelings... thinking orchestrally works well even in a smaller contexts, to break the dumb-boogie mold.
"Secrets from the Masters" - ed. Don Menn, from Guitar Player Magazine. Compilations of interviews from 40 top players, I still find new stuff to think about.
"Classical Fake Book, 2nd Edition" - Hal Leonard. Even though there's other sources for a lot of these melodies, there's no substitute for the written page sometimes when you're needing some licks to noodle through. | Great tips, thanks a lot. Productive Desecration Since 2004 |
