they can be dangerous, if you touch something (mic stand) that's grounded to another circuit (whatever outlet the PA is plugged into). some techs wire a capacitor & resistor onto the string ground to try and reduce the shock that comes from that bridge-ground tazing. don't taze satch, bro!
