Metal + models + budget = POD, or maybe Digitech if you like that "flavor" better
When you get whatever you get, try it both in front of the amp and straight into the power amp. The tube in the preamp might help warm it up a bit and make it more organic, but it might not be worth the extra color the preamp will give it.
