I just tried out the Vox Tonelab SE at a local store. It sounded pretty good, although the upgradeability of the Line6 products appeals to me. I also tried out the Genz Benz El Diablo 60C which sounded good. Not $1000 good, but if I can find it on Ebay for less....

Needless to say, this question has not been answered for me. It does seem though, that the "real" tone from the amp cannot be emulated by outboard effects.

I need to try the Pod XT Live and the Boss GT-8. Can the GT-8 be upgraded with new patches and firmware etc? Anyone own one of these?
