HEATHEN! BURN HIM!

The first Resident Evil is really everything I hate about modern horror movies all rolled into one. Well, aside from whats-her-name from The 5th Element waking up naked in the beginning - I have to admire a chick who wakes up in strange places naked in every movie she's in. But I digress - it relies entirely on shock effect and isn't really psychologically disturbing at all - that scene where the zombie's eye snaps open in a closeup is a perfect example. It makes you jump. Have her slowly open her eye with a twisted half smile and the right soundtrack, and it'd be a psychological mindfuck instead of merely a shock. But, instead, they take the cheap way out and just shock you.

I granted am not the greatest source of knowledge on all things horror movie so it's possible I've missed one or two, but I can't remember the last time I saw a genuinely psychologically disturbing horror movie since like The Exorcist.
