That is actually a very common construction technique. Why waste so much wood that is going to get milled away, just because the headstock is half an inch too narrow? Gluing on an extra piece to widen the headstock saves on material waste, which translates into a lower price for the consumer. Plus, the glue joint is actually stronger than the wood itself.

Gibson has done it for years:



While the neck is one solid piece of mahogany, the headstock has two additional pieces.
