My friends are always having problems understanding why I play a 7 and want an 8. I just say "extended range--I can play things without the need to detune and still be able to do everything you can on a 6er." Then just the other day, I was browsing here and saw that video game music thread, and got inspired to play some Doom music. I had been playing for at least 10 minutes or so before I realized I was utilizing my low B without thinking about it. Really, I could have played it on a sixer, but just reaching my pinky over to hit that low note was so much easier than shifting everything lower--and that I did it subconsciously just completely blew me away.
It's really got me looking at buying another bass. Right now I've just got a 4 stringed ibanez, but I'm seriously looking at picking up a 6 string after. I just crave more strings now.
