I always wrote Slipknot off as a gimmick band and never paid much attention to them. Then I went to Mayhem fest years ago and they were there with Disturbed, DragonForce and a ton of other bands. They were the headliner and my buddy and I were going to use their set as a chance to leave before traffic got too heavy. We said we'd stay for a song or two then leave as I wasn't expecting much. We wound up standing there for the entire set, never saying a word. They put on the most flawless, entertaining live show I've ever seen. Hearing the songs in that setting put a whole new spin on them and I went out the next day and picked up some albums. They're not technically brilliant or really even breaking new ground, but they've got "something". I think a lot of it has to do with the frontman as , even with the mask on, he was one of the most engaging people I've ever seen on a stage.
