on hi gain for me sometimes it helps to use bridge pup for practice and a compressor and delay so the comp brings the "nasty" sounds and mess ups out and the delay has them hang around for a minute when im practicing fast. i only switch to the neck once i can play it perfect. also +1 on playing clean and hi gain. i always practice my hi gain solos on clean to perfect them brings out imperfections that can be overlooked on hi gain.
