Heh, I'm the opposite. I got into 8-string guitar not liking any of the bands that use 8-strings outside of the Deftones. I found that now the writing is way more me with way less influences from my favorite bands. Of course influences are always there to some degree, whether we notice it or not. But I can happily say my newer writing doesn't sound in any direct way like my influences.
