Did the same, bought an rg 2228 when they first came out, hated the sound, pick ups were terrible, sat for a couple years as a conversation piece. recently I tried an RGA8 at a music shop and went WOW, I bought it and now I am hooked, I don't play the heavy material, I just do instrumental stuff, with the low B and High A setup it expands things a lot. the overtones of the guitars are different more mass I think? Just buy different pup's if you are not going to play bottom heavy stuff, or leave them if you like em' but there's plenty of options these days to work on the tone. WHen I bought my 2228 there were no option...that's why it sat so long, full on rg2228 mod in the works as we speak.
