FWIW, the .50 cal is similar to the mark's gain structure but with a hair more recto-ish attitude. but if you don't like your mkIVs gain i'm not sure this would be different enough for you.
I'm talking about without my ts-9 to boost the amp. The mark IV had an 80s metallica voicing at least at the volumes I played it at. You'd have to get very loud to go into dream theater territory and at those volumes I would get amazing tones from the amp but it would be hard to compensate as I lowered the volume.

The lead tones were amazing. If you check my soundclick you can hear them but rhythm at moderate volumes is where I thought this amp fell short. (I used a randall rm100 for rhythm). Did it have great lead tones? Yes. Could it do anywhere near a bone crushing rhythm tone? No.

The problem I have with comments on the mark IV is theres too many assumptions. People who have similar mesa amps assume that the mark iv is a suped up version of (insert similar voiced mesa amp here) and can do anything that an amp like the (insert similar voiced mesa amp here) could do. I'm not accusing you of never playing a mark IV I'm just making a general statement.

Don't get me wrong. The mark IV is a great amp. Maybe it just wasn't for me or I needed something easier to dial in.
