Personally, I'd prefer an eight with fanned frets, but I think it'd work fine without, but a nine string kind of needs fanned frets for sure. (That is, unless you manage some weird tuning)
Anything past nine gets awkward for my fingers, but they ought to make an affordable ten stringer.

Well, with what Garry Goodman has been saying about his strings I'd say fanned frets aren't required for 9 strings (love F#-high A).
