The words 'gate' and 'suppressor' are used interchangably. There isn't a 'technical' difference between a gate and a suppressor. If you set a suppressor high enough, it'll gate. If you set a gate low enough, it'll suppress. They're just terms. Suppressors don't limit the volume... that's a compressor/limiter.
In any case, there's really 2 uses for a gate. To kill feedback or to quiet amp(distortion) hiss. If your 'noise' is the screeching feedback type, then definately put the gate before your amp, and as close to your guitar as possible. But if you are using an OD pedal before your amp, you may want to put it after the OD. If the problem is with the amp being hissy/noisy, then put the gate in the FX loop.
Adjust sensitivity to taste... cuz there's no way to tell you the right settings for your gate on your gear. Too many variables that affect the outcome.
