Okay... the noise gate will get rid of the noise from anything before it. If you have a noisy guitar and quiet FX, putting it in the front saves a lot of hassle. If your whole rig is noisy, putting it in the back will keep people happy with you. If your gate has a loop, or you just use two gates, even better.

Skinhead, keep in mind that after anything that compresses or limits (say, for example, distortion) the noise floor is raised, and that makes it trickier to find the sweet spot where the gate does just what it's supposed to. The debate is just revolving around the issue of finding the noisiest bits and killing them because you can have rigs that benefit from the gate before and after the loop and preamp.
