sup fellas
so long story short, my friend let me borrow his peavey JSX head and marshall 412 for the summer (no room at his place until we get back to school come august) so that means a have a spiffy tube halfstack in my room.
and without further adue, a panorama of my extremely cramped room of metal meyhem
(i'll get some clips up as soon as i get a decent recording tone and find a nice mic placement, right now the mic is just set up there to make me look cool)
alright, now i've got a couple questions.
first, i've read some threads on here about people patching the fx loop for a boost or something. is this just so you can have a volume/solo boost when you hit the fx button, or does this somehow change the tone of the amp? would just turning up the channel volume do the same thing? what lead me to ask this question is a quote i saw while perusing some old JSX threads

second, i'm having a bit of trouble finding a really nice heavy metal tone. back at my friends place it sounded awesome (literally no complaints) but here at my house, the room is smaller, and i can't stand where i used to because the amp is kind of stuck between the shelf and the bed. i used to stand about 3 feet to the left of it near the corner of the room, and it sounded thick and fat and oh so awesome, but here at home i can't get in that position to play, so usually i sit on the edge of the bed or stand somewehre in the room, but it doesn't sound as heavy in the low end department, and the highs are a bit fizzy. ok alot fizzy.
my eq settings are as follows (really only use the ultra channel, crunch doesn't get much use and the clean channel still sounds awesome)
Ultra Channel (settings out of 10)
Low Gain Input
Presence: 6.2
Resonance: 7.2
Treble: 6
Mid.: 4.25
Bass: 6.2
Channel Volume: 2 to 3
Gain: 6 to 6.5
Fat: On
Noise Gate: 0
Master Volume: 0.5 to 1
Bloody Murder Overdrive: (Settings in o'clock)
Level: 1 o'clock
Tone: 12:30
Drive: 7:30
Marshall 1960A with celestio g12t75's, and the JSX is running JJ 6L6GC's with a TUNG-SOL 12AX7 in V1
I'm using my Schecter 007 Elite, all mahogany with a Seymour Duncan SH-5 Custom in the bridge, tuned to B-standard with a set of 9-46's with a 65 low B. also a 6 string Dean vendetta with an EMG 81 in the bridge tuned to C# standard with some 11-56's, but the JSX doesn't seem to like EMG's too much.
Any help is greatly appricated! e-reps to all who help!
edit- also, i noticed that after playing the crunch channel for a while, the ultra channel will sound rather Hi-Fi, and fake in comparison. I really dig the voicing of the crunch channel, but it seems to lack some aggression and balls (not heavy or chuggy enough even with an OD it seems like) and i've heard the crunch channel described as being somewhat reminiscent of a 5150, i was wondering if anyone knows if the 5150 would be what i want when the day comes when i finally buy my own tube head?
