That's the Borland method.
I'm not sure how Satch does it because I can't remember hearing him do it much but I know that Vai puts the whammy bar pointing directly away from the headstock and thumps the body of his guitar with the side of his fist. Listen to the outro of "Blue Powder" to see what I mean.
And before anyone explodes with indignation, I'm sure Vai uses what I dubbed the "Borland Method" earlier aswell.
