There are 174 pledged delegates still outstanding. Obama leads by 171. Basically, if he wins two or more of the remaining delegates, then he's clinched the delegate lead.
This must have been a blow to the Clintons, as McGovern is a close personal friend and they worked as volenteers for his presidential campaign in their youth. I can't really fault the guy for switching after everything's said and done given the fact that there's obviously a lot of friendship at stake here, and that he lost in a divisive campaign himself when his party fractured.
The "safe" bet would be just to quietly ride it out. It actually takes a lot of balls to do what he just did, and the fact he himself went down this road once before adds a lot of moral weight to what he said.
