He didn't exactly switch sides in a cut and dry way. The Clintons worked for the McGovern campaign in the 1972 primary and election season. These are close personal friends of his. When asked why, he explained how he, as the obvious presumptive nominee, still had to fight through two months, and all the way through the convention, to ultimately secure the nomination. He, and many others, attribute his loss to Nixon to the Democratic party being split down the middle. McGovern has no desire to see four more years of Bush's failed policy's carry forward, simply because someone without a chance fought to the bitter end.
