Frowning upon elite athletic competition because of a few yahoos out there who take things too far seems silly reason to dislike sports. Everything has a small extremist element to it - be it sports, entertainment, politics, hobbies, etc. Are you going to never watch a movie again because there are a few crazies out there who become obsessed with Star Wars or stalk Halle Berry?

Of course the story is disgusting, and Nerina is right. It is pathetic when sports fans take things so far that it becomes their identity. Pride in something you had nothing to do with is always nauseating (nationalism, race, etc). But for most people it's just the love of the game, the fun of it.
