| The 5150/6505 in either normal or II/+ can be a very awesome amp for what you are looking for, but they need to be matched to the right cab or they sound like dog testicles. I find they like a darker cab. Also be sparse with the EQ, and careful with the presence level.
I know a good portion of Nevermore was recorded with a Peavey Triple XXX or Ultra Plus. They have a higher frequency I personally don't care for though, and also like darker cabs.
I can't say anything about the Rivera KR7 but i really liked the K-Tre 100. Its kind of Marshally in flavor, but different enough that it has its own thing going on. On the right settings it was really smooth and articulate, but still had the chug when you need it.
As for Mesa, well they earned thier repuation for a reason. No worries there.
An Engl Fireball might do you really well, especially if you are concerned with price. The Powerball is a love or hate thing. and any thing above that is pretty much safe.
Laney TT series and the VH100 are pretty cool aswell. Tey have the british flavor, but are still voiced differently than Orange and MArshall, the TT50/100 can sound pretty recto like if you tweek it right.
As for the Genz Benz El Diablo, I would honestly rather be playing a Crate solid state head. They sound A) more tube like B) more clear c) less fizzy/buzzy, and if you are familiar with Crate you already know those are things they are famous for having in spades. |
