Yeah, with it in front, you tend to be controlling the amount of signal being sent to distort, so not only are you swelling the volume upwards, you are increasing distortion as you bring the volume pedal up. In a sense you are going from a low volume clean tone to a higher volume distorted.

Do it in the loop, and as long as its with an amp where most of the distortion comes from the preamp, you are going to have an already distorted signal, which will lower in volume, and then as you raise it just get louder only (and slightly more distorted as the power tubes kick in)
